M. P. Landis, who was born at the Lancaster General Hospital in 1965 and grew up in Landisville, was an active participant in the revitalization of downtown Lancaster in the 1980’s. He had many creative and business activities here including involvement with the early years of the first Isaac’s deli, helping to open Alexia Books with Paul and A.T. Barros-Ruof, co-running and operating a stand at Central Market, and performing with several music bands including Charmes Du Crane and the Baron’s Blues Band.
Landis became friends with David Brumbach, who was very encouraging and supportive in areas of creativity and their shared experiences of dealing with life with Type One Diabetes. Landis, who was diagnosed at age six, is the third diabetic artist from Lancaster who has gained national recognition after Brumbach and Charles Demuth.
In 1989, Landis left Lancaster and moved to Provincetown, MA to concentrate on his painting. There he devoted his time to painting and was quickly recognized by the older, established artists there and exhibited his works in yearly solo shows and many group exhibitions. In 1995 he was awarded a solo exhibition at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum entitled M. P. Landis: Provinetown Paintings 1990-1995.
In 1996, Landis moved to Brooklyn, NYC, where he continues to live and work. Landis has been in countless group shows, nationally and internationally, and 20 solo exhibitions. His work is in numerous collections both private and public including the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, the DeCordova Museum, Naples Museum of Art, Bowdoin College Museum of Art, Nassau County Museum of Art, the New York Public Library and the Peabody Essex Museum.
In early 2006 Landis was hospitalized at Beth Israel Hospital in NYC with pneumonia and kidney failure. After almost a year on dialysis Landis received a successful kidney transplant donated to him by his friend and frequent creative collaborator, musician Tom Abbs.
For his first ever exhibition in Lancaster, Landis is proud to be exhibiting at the Infantree Gallery, which is co-run by his nephew, Jed Burkholder
