Betty Mumma

Kraybill Elementary Spanish Teacher

"Spanish is an experience, not a task"

EDUCATION: Mrs. Mumma was born in Guatemala where she obtained a degree in education at the Instituto Americana Latina. She moved to the United States in 1963 and continued her education at Bob Jones University and Elizabethtown College.

EXPERIENCE: Mrs. Mumma taught at Locust Grove Mennonite School, Lititz Christian School, Mount Calvary Christian School, and Manheim Christian Day School before coming to Kraybill.

With Mrs. Mumma's immersion approach, Spanish is the only language in the classroom. Children learn just like they learn English -- from hearing, seeing, making connections between objects, actions, and sounds. Her program addresses the National Standard for Foreign Languages -- communication, culture, connections, comparisons, and communities -- as a natural part of the students' experience.

"I want my room to be cheerful, bright, educationally stimulating and a fun place to learn. I desire that when the students step into my room they feel that they are stepping into another culture or another part of the world."
