It is 1862 in Siam when an English widow and missionary, Anna Leonowens, with her young son, arrives at the Royal Palace in Bangkok, having been summoned by the Buddhist King to serve as tutor to his many children and wives.  The King is largely considered to be a barbarian by those in the West and he seeks Anna’s assistance in changing his image, if not his ways.  Their outlooks and perspectives initially collide with each other, and while both keep a firm grip on their respective traditions and values, Anna and the King grow to understand and, eventually respect one another, with the help of the King’s head wife, Lady Thiang.  A subplot involves the King’s slave, Tuptim and her forbidden love for Lun Tha, a messenger from the enemy nation of Burma.

This truly unique love story features many well known musical theatre songs including “I Whistle A Happy Tune,” “Hello, Young Lovers,” “Getting To Know You,” and “Shall We Dance.”

The King and I will be performed in the High fine Arts Center on April 26-28, at 7:30 pm each evening.  There will also be a 2:00 matinee on Saturday afternoon.  Tickets may be reserved by calling 299-0436, extension 340.
