Twelve Angry Jurors is a contemporary version of the classic, Twelve Angry Men, a classic script studied by many students in American Literature classes because of its sharp views on prejudice and judgment. Many may also recognize the classic title from the award winning film starring Henry Fonda.
This year’s production will reflect the current demographic of juries by incorporating a cast of men and women. The 12 men and women are compelled by the judge to do their civic duty and evaluate whether the young man on trial should be convicted of murder. They are forced to evaluate the evidence and determine the boy’s guilt or innocence beyond a reasonable doubt. Because of the boy’s background, many of the jurors are intent on declaring him guilty just because of where he lives. “His kind” is the kind that does these sorts of things. Besides, if he didn’t do it this time, he will just grow up and murder someone later. One juror, however, is willing to ask himself if the boy is truly guilty based on the facts. The play is a fascinating look at the human psyche, prejudices, and the judicial system.
LMH students will be challenged to develop interesting and believable characters. A visit to the Lancaster Courthouse will help actors and tech crew get a first hand look at the legal process. Seating will be limited for this show since it will be performed in the round on the stage. The small intimate space will allow audience members to truly feel a part of the discussion.
Come be a part of this interesting and intense look at what can happen behind the closed doors of the jury room.
