Kraybill Auction
Kraybill Benefit Auction & Pig Roast
Held May 9 & 10, 2008
The Kraybill Benefit Auction grossed over $142,000 across the auction block and through food sales on Friday night, May 9 and Saturday, May 10. More than 1,100 enjoyed the school’s southern-style pig roast prior to a record-setting Friday night auction that featured segments of items especially for men, women and children. Among the top items on Friday night were a pheasant hunt and a deer hunt on private game preserves that sold for $750 and $500 respectively.
The Saturday auction featured several large items, including a full-size ATV for $6,000, and 8x12’ utility shed for $1,350, a child-size four-wheeler for $1,000 and a playset for $1,000. A solid oak extension table with chairs sold for $3,000.
After these large items, unique experiences were among the top items. One bidder paid $3,500 to have a loved one be a character in an upcoming novel by best-selling author Karen Kingsbury. Another bidder paid $2,880 for a six-course five-star meal for twelve persons in the secluded private home of a chef. A four-day vacation for six persons on an historic southern plantation sold for $1,800, a crab feast sold for $1,550 and a West Virginia mountain weekend at the Graceland Inn with an historic scenic train ride sold for $1,200.
Five quilts among the eighteen full-size quilts sold for over $1,000 and several others sold in the $800-$900 range. Those breaking the $1,000 mark were a C. Jean Horst designer quilt for $$2,000, a Star in Commons for $1,700, an Ultimate Trip Around the World for $1530, a Peacock Appliqué for $1,100 and, at $1,000 even, a colorful Ohio Star Courthouse Steps pattern.
Cool weather diminished the sale of the wide variety of brand-name and home-made ice cream, along with the newly-introduced Orchard Freeze drinks, but hundreds of people enjoyed alternative foods such as Peters chicken barbeque, Gene Wenger grilled sandwiches, and more. Food sales accounted for more than $43,000 of the event’s gross income, and leftover food accounted for $9,000 over the auction block.
Money raised through the benefit auction keeps tuition at the Kraybill Campus lower than otherwise possible. The Kraybill Campus thanks the local community for making the Kraybill Auction the most successful of the auctions held by the four campuses of Lancaster Mennonite School. On the menu to the right, click to view the schedule for Friday and Saturday or to learn more about the items, experiences and food for sale in 2008.
