Jemison wins annual spelling bee

Colon, Lucas Jemison and Sydney Esch
Lancaster Mennonite School eighth grader Lucas Jemison placed first in the school’s annual spelling bee that was held at the Locust Grove Campus on January 24. Taking second and third place are sixth grader Sidney Esch and eighth grader Isreali Colon. All three are students at the Lancaster Campus. Kraybill Campus seventh grader Anna Farmer was fourth and will serve as an alternate.
After Esch misspelled “behest,” Jemison spelled it and “confidence” correctly to become grand champion. In the third-place tie-breaker, Colon correctly spelled “contraband” and “homonym” to take third place. The event included middle school students from the Kraybill, Locust Grove and Lancaster campuses of Lancaster Mennonite School.
The three winners will participate in the written test component of the 54th Intelligencer Journal Spelling Bee February 22 at Conestoga Valley Middle School. About 30 will then advance to the oral spelling bee on March 23 at Conestoga Valley Middle School. The grand champion (along with one parent) will then have the honor of competing at the 2012 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
Lucas Jemison is the son of David and Doreen Jemison, Lancaster; Sydney Esch is the daughter of Eric and Elaine Esch, Lancaster; Isreali Colon is the son of Reali and Lisa Colon, Lancaster; and Anna Farmer is the daughter of David and Wendy Farmer, Mount Joy.
