Twenty Lancaster Mennonite School students were recognized at the Lancaster County Region Scholastic Writing Awards ceremony held February 14 at Lancaster Mennonite’s High Fine Arts Center.

Kraybill eighth grader Emily Hess, daughter of Michael and Marcy Hess, Elizabethtown, received a Gold Key award—one of 12 in the county. She also received a Silver Key award and a Certificate of Merit. In addition, Emily was one of four Gold Key winners to be cited as an American Voices Nominee (and later was one of 100 to receive an American Voices medal) and the only Lancaster County student to earn these four awards. Emily’s language arts teacher is Mary Bucher.

At the high school level, three students received Silver Key awards: sophomore Grace Jemison, daughter of David and Doreen Jemison, New Providence; sophomore Anya Kreider, daughter of Barry and Erika Kreider, Akron; and junior David Rudy, son of Jonathan and Carolyn Rudy, Manheim.

Seven high school students received Certificates of Merit: senior Louise Babikow, daughter of Andrew and Alice Babikow, Lancaster; senior Christine Baer, daughter of Gerald and Rose Baer, Elizabethtown; sophomore Christi Boronow, daughter of Paul and Lynn Boronow, Lancaster; senior Aaron Gish, son of Martin and Robin Gish, Elizabethtown; senior Noah Jemison, son of David and Doreen Jemison, New Providence; senior Doyeon Kim, daughter of We Song Kim, Gyoung gi-do, South Korea; and Shelby Rhodes, daughter of Robert and Duann Rhodes, Bird-in-Hand. The high school pieces were submitted by English teachers Jane Moyer, Kathleen Engle and Jonathan Metzler.

Seven Lancaster Mennonite Middle School (LMMS) eighth graders received awards. Daniel Zook, son of Gordon and Carol Zook, Willow Street, won a Silver Key, and the following students were awarded Certificates of Merit: Sarah Anthony, daughter of Brian and Chris Anthony, Lititz; Graydon Briguglio, son of John and Karen Briguglio, Lititz; Julianna Dorozynsky, daughter of Leo and Barbara Dorozynsky, Lancaster; Renae Gochnauer, daughter of David and Rebecca Gochnauer, Conestoga; Madalyn Waller, daughter of Jeffrey and Karolyn Waller, Bausman; and Maria Waterfield, daughter of Charles and Susan Waterfield, Lancaster. These LMMS pieces were submitted by English teacher Alice Lauver.

Two Locust Grove eighth graders, taught by language arts teacher Curry Snell, won awards. Deanna Good, daughter of Steve and Jean Good, Lancaster, won a Silver Key, and Elizabeth Byler, daughter of Jon and Loice Byler, East Petersburg, won a Certificate of Merit.
