Lancaster Mennonite Middle School eighth grader Emily Rosenfeld was one of eight Lancaster County students and one of 100 across the state to qualify for the Pennsylvania National Geographic Bee held April 1 in State College. She finished in the top 20.

During the January National Geographic-sponsored geography bees held at the Lancaster Campus Rosenfield took first, while eighth grader Kelsey Troyer and seventh grader Lucas Jemison were runners-up. Rosenfield then qualifed for state competition by taking a written test.

At Locust Grove’s January bee, seventh grader Emily Peifer took first place, and sixth grader Gillian Wismer was runner up.

Rosenfeld is the daughter of David and Deborah Rosenfeld, Drumore; Troyer is the daughter of Greg and Amy Troyer, Lancaster; Jemison is the son of David and Doreen Jemison, New Providence; Peifer is the daughter of Dave and Kelly Shenk, Lancaster; and Wismer is the son of Michael and Holly Wismer, Willow Street.

According to Principal Judi Mollenkof, these bees go hand in hand with the school’s mission.

“We are working hard at becoming globally-minded citizens,” she said. “These events are an important part of those efforts.”
