Lancaster Mennonite School is now accepting applications for its 2012-13 Ninth Grade Scholarship that will be awarded in the spring to 20 eighth graders. The $1,000 scholarship is based on academic performance, character, leadership, and school and community involvement.

The purpose of the one-year merit scholarship is to encourage students to consider the excellent educational opportunities at Lancaster Mennonite, a comprehensive, holistic school that is concerned with helping students be all they can be. Applications are due March 1. The school welcomes students without regard to gender, race, nationality or ethnic origin.

The Ninth Grade Scholarship is in addition to any need-based financial aid for which the student would qualify. The school awards more than $2 million in financial aid annually to enable persons from all socioeconomic groups to benefit from an LMS education. Approximately 40 percent of LMS students receive need-based scholarships.

At Lancaster Mennonite, teachers are caring, competent professionals. Many hold masters degrees and have lived or studied in other countries to bring a truly global perspective to their teaching.

LMS students do well in competitions with other schools. They consistently win regional and national awards in art, music, writing, FFA and other competitions. LMS’s holistic athletic programs also have a winning tradition, as do LMS clubs such as FFA and FBLA, which consistently win at state and national levels.

In addition, LMS College Entrance Exam Scores consistently surpass county, state and national averages. Students who take advantage of the school’s 10 Advanced Placement classes score well on the AP exams.

LMS alumni have entered highly selective colleges and universities, and the school receives positive feedback from colleges regarding the academic preparation of LMS graduates. For its size, LMS produces many National Merit Scholars and Commended Students.

Many doctors, lawyers, college professors, school administrators, psychologists and educators want an LMS education for their children. Quality-conscious and results-oriented business persons also are satisfied that an LMS education is worth the investment.

Scholarship applicants are asked to discuss involvements in church, school and community; their interest in Lancaster Mennonite; the personal strengths they would bring to the school; and their life goals. References are needed from a principal or guidance counselor as well as from a pastor, youth leader or other church leader.
