LMS students awarded

Lancaster Mennonite High School senior Ted Maust, son of Dennis Maust and Rachel Hess, Lititz, has been named a semifinalist in the 2008 National Merit Scholarship Program. About 90 percent of the semifinalists become finalists who are eligible for merit scholarships, presented in the spring.
Five other LMS seniors have been named Commended Students. Participants qualified for the honors by achieving a high score on the PSAT/NMSQT test they took when they were juniors.
The Commended Students are Michael Baer, son of Gerald and Rose Baer, Elizabethtown; Charise Garber, daughter of Joe and Yvonne Garber, Lancaster; Janae Lapp, daughter of Nathan and Sherilyn Lapp, Gap; Darren Weinhold, son of Sharon Weinhold, Lancaster; and Kira Wenger, daughter of Jay and Suzanne Wenger, Lancaster.
- Ted Maust is a member of the National Honor Society, quiz bowl team, varsity tennis team, student newspaper, and the cast for the fall play, “Animal Farm.” After high school he hopes to study history. He is a member of the youth group at Pilgrims Mennonite Church.
- Michael Baer is a member of the National Honor Society; school newspaper; and the cross country, basketball, and track varsity teams. He plans to attend Muhlenberg College to study biology (pre-med). He is a member of the youth group at Landisville Mennonite Church.
- Charise Garber is a member of the National Honor Society and the school’s drama program. She is FFA vice president, drama-rehearsal manager, and a worship leader for the school’s chapel program. She plans to study nursing in college. At Byerland Mennonite Church she has served as worship leader, nursery attendant, and Day Camp club leader. She also is a member of the New Danville District Youth Group Executive Committee and the Atlantic Coast Conference Bible quizzing program.
- Janae Lapp is a member of the National Honor Society and quiz bowl team. She is a copy editor for the school yearbook and is interested in majoring in secondary English education in college. She is active in the Rockville Mennonite Church youth group.
- Darren Weinhold is head editor for the school newspaper, participates in drama productions, co-captain of the quiz bowl team, and is a member of the National Honor Society. He plans to study mathematics in college. At Mellinger Mennonite Church he is an active member of the youth group.
- Kira Wenger is news editor for the school newspaper and is a member of the National Honor Society, Campus Chorale, and varsity tennis. She attends James Street Mennonite Church where she participates in service opportunities and volunteers in the church office. Last year she was the church’s youth representative for the Missional Action Team.
