Superintendent’s note

Our seniors reflect home, church and their K–12 education. What kind of persons are they? Do they appreciate beauty, truth, justice and creation? Are they persons of faith, respect and community? Are they prepared for college and career?

Accompanying the seniors on their class trip to Washington, D.C., I was able to reflect on these questions. I was impressed with how this class, a diverse group in many ways, showed respect and appreciation for each other and for others.

During the Potomac River cruise, they demonstrated how they enjoy having fun together. At Washington Community Fellowship they listened respectfully to speakers and entered into worship led by K–8 children from a school that is connected to the congregation. At the National Cathedral they asked numerous questions and showed appreciation for beauty and the arts; some students went to Tim Yoder with questions, showing their commitment to being lifelong learners. (Tim was their church history teacher last year.)

This was a punctual group with all students on time 100 percent of the time. On numerous occasions, I observed students expressing thanks to the adults who helped to make their trip a success.

Seeing evidence of beauty, truth, lifelong learning, community, respect and faith in the lives of our seniors was a gift to me during this Christmas season. The character of these students bodes well for our future. Let’s celebrate the partnership of home, church and school in forming faith and other positive values in our students.

Shalom!
J. Richard Thomas

ALL CAMPUSES

Open House for PreK–12 at all campuses
Students and families interested in grades PreK–12 are invited to the Open House on Monday, February 4, 6–8:30 p.m., at all four campuses. The event will include tours and conversations with teachers. For Kraybill and Lancaster, there will also be a 7 p.m. welcome assembly. The Lancaster Campus will also include department displays, course selection for grades 9–12, and information about financial aid/scholarships.

Eighth graders prepare for high school
All 8th graders in the system will meet at the Lancaster Campus on Thursday, January 17, at 9:15 a.m. Prior to the orientation, a guidance counselor from the Lancaster Campus will meet with the group to help them understand the scheduling process and the options they have when scheduling. Current 8th grade students also are expected to attend the February 4 Open House at the Lancaster Campus and complete a schedule with faculty.

Achievement testing for grades 2-8
Kraybill will hold their achievement tests January 3–9, and Locust Grove and New Danville will hold theirs January 7–11. Thank you for not planning vacations during that time. It is important that students get plenty of sleep and avoid over-scheduling activities on these dates. Achievement testing is one way of measuring students’ academic growth, and it also helps the school evaluate curriculum.

Prospective Student Day
Prospective students are invited to visit all four campuses on Thursday, January 24. Times are: 8:05 a.m. to 3:05 p.m. for the high school, and morning only for other grades. To register, call the campus you wish to visit. High school visitors do not need to register but should call the school if they need a student host. Transportation should be arranged by parents.

Year-end giving
End-of-year giving is important, especially for the Annual Fund that helps to provide dollars for the difference between the tuition charge and the actual cost of education. At this point $224,000 has been invested in the $1,000,000 Annual Fund; an additional $776,000 is needed by June 30. Parent support is key to meeting this goal to enhance education for our students beyond the level that can be provided by tuition alone.

Early Dismissals
Parents and caregivers, please make prior arrangements and review them with your children (particularly if they ride the bus) so they know what to do and where to go when they arrive home early on early dismissal days.

Basketball tickets for PreK–8 students and families
Lancaster Mennonite High School will host three special nights during the basketball season to recognize our families at Kraybill, Locust Grove, and New Danville. Your family will receive tickets for a specific LMH JV/V basketball game (see list below). Please note: seating is first come, first served. Junior varsity games begin at 6:30 p.m. and varsity games at 8 p.m. in Gym B. Tickets will be sent home with students the first week of January. The designated nights are as follows:

January 15    Locust Grove
January 25    Kraybill
January 28    New Danville

Middle school spelling bee
The LMS Spelling Bee will be held Friday, January 25, at 9:45 a.m. at the Lancaster Campus. The bee will include middle school students from the four campuses. Our winners will compete in the Intelligencer Journal Spelling Bee.

High school drama—January 24–26
The Robe, set for January 24–26 at 7 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center, is the story of Roman Centurion Marcellus Gallio who wins Jesus Christ’s robe at the crucifixion and his journey into faith. Admission is $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for students. For tickets call (717) 299-0436, ext. 340, after January 1.

Piano lessons available
Piano lessons are offered by Jan Stauffer and Joy Ide at Locust Grove, and by Joy Ide at the high school, New Danville and Locust Grove campuses. There are openings for new students in January. Please call for more information: Locust Grove, (717) 394-7107; high school, (717) 299-0436; and New Danville, (717) 872-2506. A teacher will  contact you.

Day trip to Big Apple
LMS has 40 seats available for a day trip to New York City on March 22. Executive Coach will leave Lancaster Mennonite School at 6 a.m. and return that evening around 11:30.

The day is yours to shop, sightsee, or attend a matinee performance. This is a great gift for a friend’s birthday or simply a get away with a Sunday School class, family members, or other friends. Cost: $40 a person.

To reserve your seat(s) contact Deborah Sprunger at (717) 394-7107 or sprungerdl@lancastermennonite.org.

Lancaster Campus Fall Gathering
Thanks to all who helped make the Fall Gathering a successful event that raised over $160,000 for LMS, compared to $95,000 last year. It was encouraging to see persons from all four campuses.

The Iron Bridge Benefit Run/Walk raised $40,000 toward a new track, the Brent Nauman Memorial 3v3 tournament brought in $60,000 to support an athletic trainer, and the auction/barbecue raised $60,000 to support the Annual Fund.

Next year’s Fall Gathering, set for September 26-27, will be a homecoming event for alumni and friends.

February 3—Church Education Sunday

February 3 is Church Education Sunday in Mennonite Church USA. Each year the Mennonite Education Agency (MEA) prepares resources for congregations (in both English and Spanish), including worship planning tools and a bulletin insert master. For 2008, the theme is “We are witnesses.” You will find these materials at www.MennoniteEducation.org/CES.

Church Education Sunday, the first Sunday of each February, coincides with Transfiguration Sunday this year. Focusing on lectionary texts, the resources refer to MEA and congregational members as witnesses to the power of Mennonite education in helping to shape the church; they invite all to participate in Mennonite education.
