HS Guidance Office Notes


Course Selection for 2008-09
Parents, please be in conversation with your students regarding course selection. High school students are receiving guidance from advisory leaders and classroom teachers on the best selections for them. Course selection sheets should be completed, signed by parents and turned in to the student’s Advisory Group leader no later than February 15.


SAT/ACT dates for juniors
In December and January juniors who took the PSAT in October received their score reports along with suggestions from the guidance staff regarding plans for college. Spring dates for college admissions tests are as follows (materials are available in the guidance office; online registrations are preferred):

Test scores for grades 9 & 10
In December and January, 9th and 10th graders received individualized score reports for Terra Nova and PLAN tests given in October, along with college and career information.


Checklist for students going to college this fall

  • Complete and send college applications now if this has not  been done.
  • Begin to fill out the FAFSA, along with preparing your tax report for the year 2007. Complete and send the FAFSA by mid-February. Information on completing the FAFSA is available at (800) 692-7392.
  • Check into scholarship possibilities, noting application deadlines. Explore the following sources: Scholarship files at school, Internet search programs, parents’ employers, and community agencies. The following Web sites provide helpful information: educationplanner.org, aesmentor.org, collegeboard.org, act.org, and fastweb.com.


    Financial planning
    The following Web site offers valuable free financial planning tips: http://finaid.org/savings/


    Summer learning/enrichment experiences
    The guidance office receives information about a variety of summer learning/enrichment experiences offered by colleges for high school students. Students or parents interested in reviewing such materials should check with Mr. Hess.

    Ministry opportunities
    Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary offers high school students an opportunity to explore ministry through !Explore: A Theological Program for High School Youth. Participants receive an intensive three-week training plus an internship with a mentoring pastor. For information visit the AMBS Web site at www.ambs.edu!explore. Eastern Mennonite Seminary offers a similar program called LEAP. Check leap.emu.edu.

    Technical schools opportunities
    The Lancaster County Career and Technical Centers (LCCTC) provide a variety of career training programs for high school seniors. Programs include options in construction, automotive, mechanical, medical, secretarial, culinary and information technology careers. Students attend the CTC for full days in their senior year, but receive their diploma from LMH. Current juniors who may be interested in a CTC program for next year need to complete their application in January and should see Mr. Hess immediately if they have not already done so. Students in 9th and 10th grades who are considering a CTC program for their senior year should discuss their course selections with Mr. Hess now in order to have all LMH requirements cleared before the senior year.

    College Financial Aid Night
    Harrisburg Area Community College offers a free College Financial Aid workshop on Thursday, February 28, from 6–7:30 p.m. in Room 222 of the Main Building. This workshop is open to the public; participation is not limited to those attending HACC.
    Also, AES offers a FAFSA Completion Day at HACC’s Lancaster campus on Saturday, February 9, 9:30–noon, in room 227.

    HACC Open House
    High school juniors and seniors and their parents are invited to an open house at Harrisburg Area Community College’s Lancaster campus on Saturday, March 29, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

    Coping Kids Program
    Hospice of Lancaster County offers a Coping Kids Program for children coping with serious illness or death. Call (717) 391-2413 for more information.
