Looking Ahead for:

Kraybill Campus

Achievement Test results
Achievement Test results will be shared with parents during the spring parent teachers conferences being planned for March 4 & 6. The results help us better understand your child’s level of learning and help guide the school in curriculum development. As in all testing, the results are only one indicator of your child’s achievements.

Reading assessment, grades K–2
Reading assessment in grades K–2 will be given January 23–24. The school administers the DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) instrument three times a year in the primary grades to determine whether each child is reaching the reading benchmarks. Adjustments are made as necessary to help each child stay on track for reading.

Christmas Project
The Christmas Project collected $2,900 toward repairs of a hurricane-damaged house in Texas. A check was given to Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) Director Kevin King at the all-school Christmas assembly in December. As a school community, we feel blessed to share God’s love with a family in need. Thanks to each family who has taken part in the Christmas sharing and to Mrs. Engle and Miss Grove who coordinated the project.

Pastors Luncheon invitation
If your child has not yet invited your pastor to this year’s luncheon on Wednesday, February 20, we would encourage you to remind your child of this special event. Pastors of all our students are invited to come and enjoy lunch with the students from their congregation who attend Kraybill. The event helps pastors connect with students in their school setting.

Author’s visit
On January 23 the school will be hosting a children’s author—Marty Crisp—who is a journalist at the Lancaster Newspapers. Ms. Crisp will meet with Kraybill Campus students in the afternoon after having met with Locust Grove students in the morning. Inviting an author to visit the school greatly encourages students in reading and writing.

Palazzo Gallery and middle school/gym connector
Construction on the gym entrance connected to the middle school is nearing completion. Plans are to finish the entrance in time for the open house on Monday, February 4. (See page 2 for information about the February 10 dedication.)

The completed project allows students to move into the gym from the middle school without passing through the intermediate hallway and without going outside. Consequently, the rear doors to the school can remain secured while students are in school. Plans are to display some of Kristen Palazzo’s art in the gallery as a memorial to her life and her artistic ability. Approximately $40,000 is still needed in capital funds to cover construction costs.

Spiritual Emphasis Week
A Spiritual Emphasis Week for middle school students is scheduled for Monday–Friday, February 4–8. Normally, middle school students have chapel once a week, but during Spiritual Emphasis Week they will gather each morning for an hour for worship, sharing and a message from Randall Shull, pastor of Landisville Mennonite Church. Students will be invited to reflect on what it means to be called to follow Christ and live in harmony with what God desires for their lives.

Educational Trip Request forms
Educational Trip Request forms are available at the office for families planning to take a winter vacation. In order to receive an educational excuse, parents must complete an Educational Trip Request form at least two weeks in advance and describe the learning qualities/activities during the vacation. Students are required to select a project to be completed and handed in to the teacher seven days after returning home. Consult the Student Handbook, page 5.

International volunteer
Sister Trivina, this year’s international volunteer from Egypt, will be hosted by Steve and Mary Beth Will for the remainder of the school year. Their children, Lauren (kindergarten) and Kathryn (3rd), are enrolled at Kraybill. Special thanks to Rudy and Reba Wolgemuth of Landis Rd., Elizabethtown, for providing a home for Sister Trivina the first half of the year. Kraybill families may invite Sister Trivina to their house for a meal or just for a time to visit; call the school or the Will family.
