Superintendent’s note
“Teach me your way, O Lord.” These words from Psalm 86:11 serve as our school motto. You will find them on one of the pillars as you enter the Lancaster Campus from the Lincoln Highway (the two pillars were a gift from the class of 1950), and soon they will appear on banners at each of our campuses. While we are not sure of the exact date the motto was adopted, we know it has been part of the school since the 1940s.
During back-to-school chapels at the Lancaster, Locust Grove, New Danville and Kraybill campuses I shared our motto with students and asked them to make these words a daily prayer during this school year. Now, I ask you to join us in praying the motto for yourself, your children and all the children and staff of Lancaster Mennonite School.
As we are taught the way of the Lord and how to walk in God’s truth, our behavior will be Christlike, our worship heartfelt, and our love for others one that extends across the street and around the world.
“Teach me your way, O Lord.”
Shalom!
J. Richard Thomas

Sixth Grade Career Fair
All sixth grade students will participate in the “What in the World” career fair in the Lancaster Campus Gathering Area on September 23 at 9:30 a.m. The event is hosted by Lancaster Lebanon Science and Technology Alliance and promotes career awareness in the science and technology fields. Students will eat lunch together in Alumni Dining Hall before returning to their campuses.
Middle School MEA Band/Orchestra Festival
The Lancaster Campus will host the Mennonite Schools Council Middle School Band/Orchestra Festival on Friday, October 24, with
a public concert at 7 p.m.
Box tops for education/Campbells labels
Collect box top labels from Betty Crocker and General Mills products and earn cash for each campus. Give the labels to the school office. The Lancaster Campus also saves Campbells labels. In all cases, please make sure the bar code remains intact. These and grocery store programs raised thousands of dollars for our campuses last year. Every one counts!
Register now for MSO basketball
The Mennonite Sports Organization, a program of LMS, is accepting registrations for the winter girls and boys basketball program. Children in grades 2-6 are eligible, regardless of school. Registration and other information can be found at www.mennonitesports.org. The deadline is Sept. 19. Orientation/practice begins Saturday, November 22, at the Lancaster Campus. Games begin Saturday, December 13.
The MSO provides Christ-centered sports opportunities for elementary age children in a nurturing environment that promotes sportsmanship, fun, knowledge and enjoyment of the game. Children do not need to be enrolled in Lancaster Mennonite School to participate.
About 160 children gathered Saturday, August 23, at the Lancaster Campus for the kickoff of the fall season which includes girls field hockey and boys soccer. Superintendent Richard Thomas says MSO parents have expressed appreciation for a program that allows their children to develop athletic skills in a Christian context and that protects Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings for church and family life.
Calendar corrections
On the back of the school calendar Elizabeth Hackman’s phone number should be (610) 393-6540, and Lydia Ramer Hunter’s should be (717) 299-7137.
Piano lessons
Piano lessons are offered at the Locust Grove, New Danville and high school campuses. Please call Joy Ide at (717) 464-4686 for further information.
Students leaving school early
Students needing to leave school early must bring, on the day of the early dismissal, a written permission signed by a parent. After students arrive in the morning, they are not permitted to leave until the end of the school day unless they have an approved early dismissal.
Tuition payments
When making your monthly tuition payment, please clearly indicate tuition payment amount for each student or send tuition coupons from the booklets for each student. One check may still be written.
Plan for achievement tests
Achievement Tests for grades 2–8 are set for January 5–9. Please avoid planning family trips at that time. This is important in assessing your child’s academic progress and is difficult to make up.
Visiting the school—a friendly reminder
Please sign in at the school office when you volunteer or visit.
Absences, tardies, educational activities
Please refer to the school calendar or student handbook for policies regarding absences, tardies, and information about the Educational Excuse Request Form.
