HS Guidance Office Notes
Summer Office Plans
We are excited about the upcoming plans this summer in the guidance and high school offices. Improvements will include fresh paint, new carpet and furniture. We are especially excited about a new guidance career center that will be complete for next school year. This area for students will include several computers for online college research, SAT registration and career assessments. Along with computers, there will be new tables and chairs for counselors and students to collaborate. Besides several books and other College Board resources, a projector and computer will aid college reps as they give presentations about their colleges and universities. We feel blessed and are looking forward to this upcoming summer improvement!
Counselors’ summer schedules
Throughout the summer months, school counselors will be in their office a limited amount of time. Counselors will periodically check their email and voicemail messages. If students need to meet with their counselor this summer, they may leave a voicemail or send an email to their counselor to find out what days they will be in the office this summer. When counselors receive a message, they will do their best to reply in a timely fashion.
Senior Presentations
During two April evenings, we welcomed several seniors who shared their senior presentation on campus. Along with classmates and faculty, family members and friends were invited to share in this celebration. In preparation for next year’s required evening senior presentations, this year’s juniors will receive a brochure in advisory groups with more information. Advisory group leaders will work with next year’s seniors to help develop their presentation. A booklet is currently being developed that will be sent to parents and posted on the school’s website with more information on the senior portfolio and presentation later this summer.
Report Cards
Report cards will be mailed mid-June. Included with the report card for all 2009-10 juniors will be a health and physical form that must be completed and returned by the beginning of school in August. This physical is required by the state of Pennsylvania.
Students who fail courses
Students who fail courses throughout the year should strongly consider making them up in a summer school program or register to take them again next school year. A number of local high schools offer summer school programs which run late-June through July. For more information, students can contact their school counselor.
Miscellaneous
- College-bound seniors received request forms for mailing their final transcripts to the college they plan to attend. These transcripts will be mailed in late June. Parents are reminded that all accounts must be fully paid in order for transcripts or report cards to be sent.
- During the past two weeks, nearly 100 students took Advanced Placement exams from College Board in 12 subject areas.
- Guidance staff are currently working hard to prepare next year’s class schedule. Since we continue making schedule adjustments throughout the summer, we wait until August to mail schedules to students for the new school year.
- Students who took courses for HACC credit this year will need to arrange with HACC for this credit to be transferred to the college they attend. HACC charges $3.00 for each transcript processed.
- Parents are encouraged to stay in communication with teachers of any courses in which students may be at risk of failing. Progress reports were sent out the last two weeks. In order for seniors to participate in commencement activities with their class, all credit requirements must be completed before commencement.
- Conestoga Valley High School will host the Annual Lancaster County College Night on November 2, 6:30–8:30 pm. There will be more than 215 institutions present. For more information, please call CVHS at 717-399-8291.
