Superintendent’s note
In a few days the class of 2009 will receive their LMH diplomas, and family and friends will reflect on how these graduates have changed since they entered kindergarten 13 years ago. This rite of passage is a time of emotion and celebration as our students participate in Commencement Celebration 2009.
During their LMS years, their lives will have been transformed through being in a Christ-centered educational community. Recently, I interacted with a number of high school students and was impressed with their clarity of purpose and plans for the future. I found them to be self-aware and realistic about the further training/education required to reach their goals. And they seemed grounded in faith and values that really matter.
Throughout the elementary, middle and high school years, LMS builds a community that enables holistic education to flourish. This community extends beyond the campus to include families, friends, congregations and the broader Lancaster community. Altogether these groups create a village that nurtures and educates our children to be involved in Christlike witness, peacemaking and service in a global society.
At the end of a school year it seems important to celebrate and thank you for your role in our education village. Some of you have your first child in kindergarten this year and will continue in the school journey for quite a few more years. Others of you will end the child-in-school part of the journey as you see your youngest graduate in a few days. But all of you remain a part of the village that comes together to provide excellence in Christian education for our children.
Shalom!
J. Richard Thomas

The location will be Refreshing Mountain Camp near Stephens, north of the Turnpike. The first day will mostly be experienced at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area. The basic format will otherwise follow the Spruce Lake trip.

Photo art show
The high school’s Photo 2 students will open an art exhibit in the Sound and Vision Gallery at Glick Audio and Video with a reception on Friday, May 22, from 7–9 p.m. The show will run through August.
Middle School Fine Arts Festival a success
The third annual LMS Middle School Fine Arts Festival on April 2 drew an even larger crowd than last year. The event included a combined band and strings group (from all campuses), two handbell choirs, and five choirs (including three from Kraybill). There were 26 individual/small group entries this year which included instrumental, vocal, and piano categories.
Parents were delighted with the talent and training represented in the outstanding art show, organized by art teachers from all campuses. The music judges noted that students who participated last year were even better this year.
Thanks to the work of many, this event has not only provided a forum for featuring the arts in our schools, but it has also helped our music and art students grow.
