LMS System

A Message from the Superintendent

J. Richard Thomas

We just celebrated Easter—the resurrection of Jesus over the powers of evil, even death. Alleluia!

According to a recent Barna survey, most Americans consider Easter a religious holiday, but fewer correctly identify its meaning. The survey showed 73 percent of baby boomers (age 45-63) say Easter is a religious holiday, while the youngest adult generation, the mosaics (ages 18 to 25), were the least likely to say Easter is a religious holiday (58 percent), reflecting the increasingly secular mindset of young adults.

As I consider these social trends I am grateful for Christian schools like LMS that have the opportunity to form Christians each day of the school year. In a Christian school we can pick up Monday morning where the church stopped on Sunday.

Attending LMH Senior Presentations has been a time of reflection and celebration. Students reflected on their high school journey, their faith, their gifts and abilities, and their future plans. Here are just a few of the things I heard them share:

    • “I feel I can be a person of impact on our world.”
    • Plans to be baptized later this spring.
    • Looking forward to a career in music or engineering.
    • Positive spiritual experience at LMH.
    • Atmosphere at LMH is calmer than the public school.
    • Plays drums in church praise band.
    • Plans to major in business in college.
    • Did not take faith seriously before LMH.
    • Developed an identity as a Christian and lifelong learner at LMH.
    • Possible career as professor or work in inner-city ministries.
    • Likes chapel.
    • Engineering as career.
    • Part of youth worship team at church.

Listening to our students gives me a pride in our family/church/school partnership for educational “excellence plus.”  As we are committed to “excellence plus,” we can be assured that we are providing an environment that nurtures Christian faith so our children will not only know the meaning of Easter but will also change our world as they share the joy and meaning of Easter, and walk in the power of the resurrection.

Our Lord has risen—Let us follow Him.

Shalom!
