Lancaster Mennonite High School to perform
Twelve Angry Jurors
Lancaster Mennonite High School students, under the direction of Danielle Hofstetter, will perform Sherman Sergel’s Twelve Angry Jurors Thursday through Saturday, January 26-28, in the school’s Calvin and Janet High Fine Arts Center. The time is 7 p.m. nightly plus a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee. Admission is $5.00 for students and $8.00 for adults. Call early for tickets—(717) 299-0436, ext. 340—since seating will be limited. Audience members will sit on the stage “in the round” to feel closer to the discussion.
The show is an adaptation of Twelve Angry Men, a classic script studied by many students in American Literature classes because of its sharp views on prejudice and judgment. Many may also recognize the title from the award winning film starring Henry Fonda.
Twelve Angry Jurors will reflect the current demographic of juries by incorporating a cast of men and women. The 12 men and women are compelled by the judge to do their civic duty and evaluate whether the young man on trial should be convicted of murder. They are forced to evaluate the evidence and determine the boy’s guilt or innocence beyond a reasonable doubt. Because of the boy’s background, many of the jurors are intent on declaring him guilty just because of where he lives. “His kind” is the kind that does these sorts of things. Besides, if he didn’t do it this time, he will just grow up and murder someone later. One juror, however, is willing to ask himself if the boy is truly guilty based on the facts. The play is a fascinating look at the human psyche, prejudices, and the judicial system.
In preparation for the show, the actors and tech crew will visit the Lancaster County Courthouse to get a first-hand look at the legal process.
