On June 13 Lancaster Mennonite High School’s Campus Chorale embarked on a cross-cultural music journey to Brazil and Paraguay.

Marcella Hostetler, director of Campus Chorale, was born in Brazil and Portugese, the language of Brazil, was her first language. “I value the broadening experience of taking the students to another country,” she said. “The music of Brazil is soothing, joyful and exuberant.” In 2014, she led a Campus Chorale trip to South Africa where the Chorale experienced African music styles and culture.

The select choir will arrive in Sao Paulo, Brazil, then fly to Curitiba, where they will visit and perform concerts at Colegio Erasto Gaertner and Witmarsum Mennonite Colony School and conduct a workshop with a children’s choir. Leaving Curitiba, they will travel to Paraguay to visit and perform a concert at Colegio Johannes Gutenberg, then visit Colegio El Sendero.

During their tour, they will spend time at Iguaçu National Park and see the spectacular Iguacu Falls (Iguazu Falls, Iguazú Falls, Iguassu Falls, or Iguaçu Falls) of the Iguacu River on the border of the Argentine province of Misiones and the Brazilian state of Paraná.

After seeing the falls, the Chorale will travel to Recife for a music workshop with Orchestra Crianca Cidada, Sao Joao Holiday festivities with host families, community service projects and church services with host families. They will also perform a concert for area churches.

The trip will conclude in Rio de Janeiro with visits to the city’s most memorable sightseeing attractions, such as Copacabana Beach, Corcovado (“Christ the Redeemer” statue), and Sugar Loaf. They will return to Lancaster, PA, on June 30.

As Lancaster Mennonite High School’s select auditioned choir, the Campus Chorale has a reputation for choral excellence. Campus Chorale provides concerts and programs for many local congregations and has performed throughout the United States and internationally.
