In May, Landis Homes announced Brianna Scheidt as their 2015 Art Student Scholarship Award recipient. Scheidt, a Lancaster Mennonite High School senior, was chosen for her digital painting which is a self-portrait.
“Brianna is a talented student that enjoys sharing her gifts,” says Kathy Ciaccia, art department director. “In class she presented a PowerPoint to teach other students the process she used to create her self-portrait using the computer.”
Brianna lives with her family and her dog, Junie, in Ephrata, PA. Her parents are Bill and Jo Scheidt, and her older sister is Erica. She is part Washington Avenue Bible Church, where she sometimes sings with the worship band. She says, “One of my favorite things about my church is how supportive and encouraging everyone is.”
At Lancaster Mennonite, Scheidt played volleyball for five seasons, and was involved in three musicals: “Another Show,” “Godspell,” and “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” Brianna also sang as a soprano in the school choir.
Each year since 1995, Landis Homes selects a piece of artwork from the Lancaster Mennonite High School Spring Fine Arts Festival to become part of a permanent art collection on the retirement community campus. In return for the work, Landis Homes makes contributions to the Lancaster Mennonite School art department and to the student to help further their education. Brianna is the 21st student to receive this award.
Scheidt says, “This summer I’m planning to go back to South Dakota with my youth group on a mission’s trip, to the Chanku Waste Tribe. We will run a summer camp for the children ages 5 through 17.” She said the contribution “was an answer to prayer” and will go towards the purchase her plane ticket to South Dakota where she can “spread God’s love to kids.”
