Putting Awareness into Action
Eighth-grade students at Lancaster Mennonite School’s Locust Grove Campus washed cars to raise funds to buy a family in Asia a water buffalo through the Heifer International program.
The carwash was the culminating project for Mrs. Barbara Josephian’s 8th grade Language Arts class, which designed and implemented a series of projects after learning about conditions around the world for those living in poverty and in crisis. Stimulated by reading the book The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, the final project was designed to raise student awareness while caring for others.
Developing a plan to raise awareness and money was part of the project, but implementing the plan was not required. To their credit, many of the students actually put their plans into action and did the work necessary to raise funds.
Students did an oral presentation for friends and family on April 5. Several of the groups set up stands to raise funds that night. The projects studied included Orphans in China (planning a bake sale in June), Poverty and Refugees in France (did a bake sale and designed t-shirts for sale), Orphans in Uganda (did a bake sale), Child Slavery in Eritrea (bake sale), Sustainable Agriculture in Malawi (carwash), Syrian Refugee Crisis, Water in Sub-Saharan Africa (solicited donations) and the Opioid Crisis in Pennsylvania (bake sale).
