Fall 2015 Production
Lancaster Mennonite began its 2015-16 theatre season with Christopher Sergel’s simple and lovely adaptation of Harper Lee’s timeless and eerily appropriate piece, To Kill a Mockingbird! Published in 1960, To Kill a Mockingbird was immediately successful, winning the Pulitzer Prize, and has become a classic of modern American literature.
Mr. Sergel’s adaptation of Harper Lee’s novel introduced a host of interesting characters and a very intricate plot with multiple layers of stereotypes and injustice that is fitting for the unfortunate racially-charged events that have occurred across the United States during the past two years.
SYNOPSIS
The play is set in Maycomb County, Alabama, during the Great Depression where Scout and Jem Finch, along with their summer-time friend, Dill, spend much of their time staying out of trouble and creating ways to draw their reclusive neighbor, Boo Radley, out from hiding.
When Atticus Finch, a widowed father and a respected lawyer, is asked to defend a black man named Tom Robinson who is accused of fabricated rape charges, the trial and subsequent events expose the children to many forms of social injustices and racism.
