For the first time in 35 years, Lancaster Mennonite boys basketball returned to the LL League Finals — and this time, they brought home the championship.
For one LM family, the moment was more than historic. It was deeply personal.
Alumnus and current parent Chad Hurst ’91 vividly remembers standing on the court in 1991 as a senior when Lancaster Mennonite advanced to the LL League Finals — ultimately finishing as runner-up. Fast forward 35 years, and Chad was back in the stands — this time cheering on his youngest son, Chase, a senior on this year’s team.
This time, LM won.
“It’s surreal,” shared Chad. “It’s been a great ride to have my kids love one of my loves — basketball. And for them to put team and team goals first. Growing up all the hard work and effort that Chase has put in to get to this place isn’t lost on us. It’s nice to see that hard work is still rewarded.”
A Legacy Bigger Than Basketball
At Lancaster Mennonite, athletics are about more than competition. They are an extension of our mission — forming students who pursue excellence, serve others, and seek Christ wholeheartedly in every arena of life.
For the Hurst family, that formation has unfolded over decades.
Number 21 has become something of a Hurst family legacy. Chad ’91 wore it. Coleen ’92 wore it. And so did Chase’s older siblings — Cody ’16, Carter ’18, Cyleigh ’20, and Camden ’23 — each carrying on the tradition (except during seasons when siblings played together).
Now Chase proudly wears 21, adding his own chapter to a story — one that includes an LL League championship banner and that reflects perseverance, humility, and commitment to the team above self.
The championship represents hours of practice, sacrifice, and discipline. But it also reflects something deeper — young men learning to trust one another, to lead with character, and to give glory to God in both victory and defeat.
For Chad, watching his son step onto the same stage he once did is a powerful reminder of God’s faithfulness across generations.
Moments like this embody what makes LM distinctive: a Christ-centered community where faith and learning — and yes, even basketball — are woven together. Where students are encouraged not just to win games, but to grow in integrity, resilience, and purpose.
What’s Next
With the LL League title secured, the Blazers now turn their attention to District Playoffs.
Boys 3A District Playoffs
- Quarterfinals: Tuesday, 2/17 (Higher seed hosts) — LM receives a bye
- Semifinals: Friday, 2/20 (Higher seed hosts) — LM, as the #2 seed, will host the winner of the 3/6 matchup
Game times and additional details will be shared as they are finalized.
As the team prepares for districts, the LM community celebrates more than a banner. We celebrate growth. We celebrate legacy. And we celebrate a school where generations continue to be shaped — on the court and beyond — for lives of faith and purpose.
The journey continues — and the LM community will be cheering every step of the way. Come cheer on the Blazers!
