Each year the Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association honors one of its members as coach of the year in each high school classification. The criteria for this honor is very demanding. The coach must demonstrate knowledge of the game through the understanding of the rules and have developed a sound coaching philosophy. They must have established good rapport with the team, officials, and other coaches. Their conduct, as well as the conduct of the team, must represent the highest ideals of the game. They must also have exhibited involvement outside their high school program and be recognized by fellow coaches.
This year the Pennsylvania State Soccer Coaches Association presented the 2024 W. Gene Davis Memorial Award as Coach of the Year in the A Male classification to Coach Winey!
Coach Winey share, “Lancaster Mennonite School holds a special place in my heart. As I walk the halls and athletic fields, I am constantly reminded of my time as a student. I can honestly say that those were some of the best years of my life. I not only developed as a soccer player, but as a student, as a leader, and as a man of faith. Who I am has been shaped in no small part by my presence at Lancaster Mennonite. It’s an honor to be recognized for my efforts and I accept them, knowing full well, that what I have been able to achieve is due to the example my parents laid for me, the mentors who invested in me, the coaching colleagues who assisted me, and the many student-athletes who put their faith and trust in me over the years.”
Andrew Fried, LM Athletic Director states, “This accolade could not have happened to a more deserved coach and person. Fred Winey represents Lancaster Mennonite in the greatest manner. He teaches the game of soccer with passion and prestige. More important than successful outcomes, is his heart for his players. Fred’s 300 career victories, which we celebrated early in the season, are a sign of a great coach, but Fred’s heart and desire has always been teaching life lessons and being a prominent role model for these boys. We were all so proud and full of joy watching the soccer boys bring home a state championship this year and could not have happened to a better group of young men. Fred Winey and his staff have a lot to do with that. Well deserved award and proud to call Fred Winey our boys soccer coach.”
“It is with great joy that we celebrate and honor our dear colleague, Fred Winey. He is an outstanding teacher and coach and is a valuable part of our school community. Join me in congratulating him on this accomplishment as we continue to celebrate a great year together!”, Kirk Benner – High School Principal.
In addition, he has been named the United Soccer Coaches East Region Coach of the Year. These are high honors and very well deserved. Congratulations!
