WAYS TO GET FREE INTERNET ACCESS

Comcast (Xfinity): To get 60 Days of free “Internet Essentials,” you have to be an eligible “qualified low-income household.”

-Go to InternetEssentials.com or call 855-846-8376 (English) or

call 855-765-6995 (Spanish)

-All new customers will receive a “free self-install kit” with no

shipping fee

Spectrum (Previously Time Warner Cable): Must be a household with a student enrolled in a K-12 school or college.

-Call 844-488-8305 (Installation fees will be waived for eligible households)

The free offerings from Comcast and Spectrum are only available to households that don’t already have a subscription. This policy may have changed since Covid-19.

Both Comcast and Spectrum also have Wi-Fi hotspots made free to the public. To assess a Comcast or Spectrum hotspot:

  1. Search Settings on computer
  2. Click on settings
  3. Click on Show Available Networks
  4. Available hotspots in your area will show OPEN
  5. Click on any of the OPEN hotspots to connect for free
  6. If Comcast is in your area, you’ll see Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots. Spectrum should be similar.

Other Possible Options:

  • com – has a free data plan to receive 500 megabytes of data at no cost
  • net – restricted to only 10 hours per month
  • Most smartphones have a hotspot feature, also referred to as “tethering). To access your smartphone hotspot, click on Settings and then toggle on Personal Hotspot. It will provide you with a password. You then need to choose “iPhone” or other smartphone from the Wi-Fi settings on your computer and enter the password when prompted.
  • IMPORTANT: Hotspots using your smartphone do tend to consume a lot of data, therefore, this may not be an option if you have a limited data plan.
