Faculty inservice

LM faculty participated in Professional Development this week with an emphasis on English Language Development (ELD) so that we can better support our students for whom English is not their first language.  One of LM’s core values is to “cultivate global citizens,” and we believe that welcoming and supporting linguistically diverse students helps all LM students to thrive!

Teachers learned the progression at which someone typically learns a new language, ways to create welcoming classrooms, strategies and accommodations for their instruction, and general ways to help English and multilingual learners to excel as students in our school community.  More than 10% of our student body are English Learners, bringing invaluable and diverse perspectives and experiences to our community.

Dr. Katelyn Barlet provided the training session. She is at LM as an IU13 ESL/ELD Specialist for our students in grades K-12. Dr. Barlet comes to LM with a breadth of experience and knowledge as an adjunct instructor for courses at EMU (Lancaster), Supervisor of Multilingual Learning for Manheim Township School District, ESL Supervisor, ESL Specialist, and Reading Specialist for the School District of Lancaster, and research/degrees in adult and elementary education.

We’re honored to have her as part of the team and appreciate the ways she is sharing her knowledge with our employees and supporting our students.
