For Lancaster Mennonite School senior Billy Simms, a passion for technology has always been part of who he is. So when he learned that the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC) offered a Computer & Networking program, he knew it was an opportunity worth pursuing.
“I’ve always been into computers,” Billy shared. “When I heard CTC had a program focused on computer and networking, it automatically caught my attention.”
Now in his senior year, Billy spends his days diving deep into the technical side of computing. A typical day in the program involves learning behind a screen—but it’s anything but passive. Students explore the inner workings of computers and networks, studying motherboards, networking concepts, algorithms, and foundational frameworks like the OSI Model that power modern technology.
One of Billy’s favorite parts of the program has been the hands-on experience with computer hardware. Students regularly work with the physical components inside a computer, building machines from scratch and taking them apart to understand how each piece works together.
“We worked a lot with the parts that go inside a computer,” Billy said. “Putting computers together and taking them apart was really fun, and it gave me a better understanding of what I want to do after high school.”
Like any technical field, the program comes with challenges. For Billy, learning and remembering commands—and knowing when to use them—has been one of the most difficult aspects. But with practice, those challenges have turned into growth.
“Once you start remembering the commands and the scenarios you would use them in, it makes the class a lot easier,” he explained.
Billy encourages other students who may be considering a career and technical pathway to take time to explore their options and come prepared.
“Make sure you do your research on the class and the topics you’ll go over before signing up,” he advised.
Billy’s experience at LCCTC reflects Lancaster Mennonite School’s commitment to meeting students where they are and helping them explore pathways that align with their interests, strengths, and future goals. Through hands-on learning and real-world skill development, students like Billy are gaining clarity, confidence, and a strong foundation for what comes next—both in college and beyond.
