Two successful days of the Glen Lapp Memorial Volleyball Tournament wrapped up last weekend! The event was created to honor the life of Glen Lapp (‘87), an aid worker who was killed along with nine others while they were providing free medical assistance to a rural area in Afghanistan. Throughout his life he was focused on treating people with love and respect, and showing them Christ’s love.
Glen was also passionate about volleyball. He played, and later coached, at Lancaster Mennonite. After Glen’s death, his family and friends orchestrated an informal volleyball tournament in honor of his life. The tournament then became a formal LM event and is in its 15th year. True to Glen’s easygoing disposition, the tournament is played “Glen style”—no refs, and players call all their own lines.
All proceeds from the volleyball tournament benefit the Glen D. Lapp Endowment for Student Aid. True to Glen’s global perspective, the endowment was created to provide scholarships for immigrant and refugee students at LM. This year it raised just over $ $5,400! The endowment as a whole has reached over $90,000.
Tournament organizer, Kevin Groff (‘95), shared that, “We are thrilled to see this tournament grow from a small group of alumni getting together to celebrate Glen’s life to 15 years later, one of the premiere indoor quads tournaments in the area, drawing a wide range of talent from high school, college, professional, and well-seasoned players. We appreciate LM’s eagerness to host this event and help keep Glen’s legacy of others-first service alive.”
Thank you to everyone who helped make this a success, and congratulations to our winners from both divisions!
