Families are trying to balance working from home or keeping kids engaged in learning and busy during this long break from school during closures and social isolation due to COVID-19.
Lancaster Mennonite School has continued to operate remotely for all of our students in grades PreK-12. Our creative, passionate teachers have continued to develop innovative, quality educational experiences for our students to do online or remotely from home. We wanted to share some resources from our pro teachers that you can do with your kids at home to continue to inspire learning and fun! See below activities and lessons for learning at home with your Elementary age kids.
Make Cards & Practice Gratitude
Our teachers have been working on gratitude in their recent classes. Students were assigned to make cards, and write words of encouragement and thanks to a healthcare provider for all their work, or to persons at retirement communities so they know they are not alone.
You and your child could decorate cards or write letters of appreciation to send to those on the front lines – healthcare workers, grocery employees, or postal workers. Or send a note of encouragement to someone that is lonely or feeling isolated, like a grandparent or community member at their home.
DIY Home Theatre
LM Makerspace and Art Teacher, Ms. Longenecker shares how to create paper puppets and a puppet theater from junk mail materials you likely already have at home. Follow the steps below to make your own Home Theatre and puppets.
The hope is that these coloring page prayers will help you in times when you might feel anxious. Through the words, images, shapes, and opportunities to color and reflect, we hope you will find peace and calm in your life.

Cook Together – Chicken Empanadas (Puerto Rican Style)
Students from our New Danville Campus Spanish Club, “¡Jugamos!” meaning, “Let’s play!”, had made Chicken Empanadas together. One of our students was practicing the empanada recipe from home, and we share the recipe and directions in the video clip below.
On this video clip is a recipe for making homemade SOFRITO which is the staple of this meat for the empanadas. If you feel overwhelmed with making the Sofrito, C-Town Supermarket on King in Lancaster City and Walmart carry frozen Sofrito, which is a good option for purchasing it instead of making it.
We’d LOVE to see your projects when you’ve completed them! Please share your photos with us at: email@example.com. Thanks and keep creating!
